Only by chance one day our trusted and charming suppliers from Madagascar shared a number of photographs of agate slates. Giberto almost fell off his chair, the slates were beyond any kind of possible expectation, frames needed to urgently be made. The next steps were not easy, but what a surprise when they finally made it to our head quarters and we could fill them with our favorite photos. Every Agata frame’s pattern is completely different from one another. The grains on each one are the result of millennia of nature’s work, the Earth’s natural pattern.
In the photo (only for show) is Miu, “my wife Bianca’s great grandmother”. Born in France, she later exiled to Morocco, the beautiful country in which she lived for several adventurous years. Bianca’s mother was actually born there, in Larache, and many of her grandchildren stayed with her on long sejours. Even today they can tell you wonderful stories about those very special years, that magical light, the flowers and, on top of all that beauty and fun, the familiar warmth Miu conveyed.

The Designer

The life of Giberto Arrivabene Valenti Gonzaga is viscerally linked to Venice. His childhood memories, the most beautiful, are those that have taken place in the rooms of Palazzo Papadopoli, between frescoes of Tiepolo and family affection. “In my earliest memories Venice had other colours. It was more obscure, dramatic, decayed and deeply romantic – simply beautiful. There wasn’t the same light like there is today – more dazzling perhaps, but less poetic.”

Each piece derives from a watercolour sketch made by Giberto on tracing paper: “When I see something that inspires me, or an object that I like, I sketch and rework it – then move on to the realization of it.”

The glass, the main material in the collections, is worked exclusively in Murano. Each glass, each specific object, is blown by master glassmakers in the Venetian furnaces.

Giberto takes his watercolours to discuss with them and refine the project, check its feasibility, and to make eventual changes.
